سلسلة صور ، القاهرة ، مصر 2009
ارض اللوء تمتاز بشورعها الطويلة و علي الجانبين مساكن عالية.
في هذة المنطقة تستقر تقريبا كل انواع المحلات-واحد بجانب الاخر-يكاد يكون في كل مبنى نشاط تجاري.
آرت اللوا للفنون المعاصرة تشبه هذه المحلات: مكان صغير المساحة يتم فتحه يومياً لعرض أعمال فنية.
لقد قمت بعمل صور فوتوغرافية لبعض الملاك والعاملين في هذة المحلات، يتم عرض الصور في خط واحد داخل المساحة.
يقدم المعرض في "محل" آرت اللوا نظرة قريبة عن الحياة اليومية لحياة الملاك، و العاملين و محيطهم ـ و قد تحولت لتصبح صور على الحائط. وبهذه الطريقة تصبح صورهم في "محل-متاخم"طريق للتواصل بينهم و بين المساحة الفنية.
أحمد كامل
ولد في القاهرة عام 1981، حصل على بكالوريوس الفنون الجميلة، قسم التصوير، القاهرة.
أظهر اهتماما باستخدام الفن بوصفه شكلا لطرح الموضوعات ذات الطابع الاجتماعية ، يعمل بالتصوير الفوتوغرافي والفيديو للتعبير عن اهتمامه بالمساحات الخاصة بالأساس، وكذلك بالمناطق الحضرية. شارك كامل في عدد من الإقامات الفنية وورش العمل. كما انه شارك في عدة معارض في مصر وألمانيا والدنمارك وتركيا والأردن.

Shop-Abutting
Photo series, Cairo-Egypt (2009)
Ard El Lewa consists of long narrow streets with high dwelling houses on both sides.
In this area you can find all kinds of shops – one after another, and almost every building includes various commercial activities.
artellewa contemporary art showroom imitates these shops; A small space that opens everyday to show artworks.
I have photographed some owners/workers of some shops, to exhibit these pictures in one line inside the showroom.
The exhibition in artellewa "shop" offers an insight look of the everyday life of the owners, workers, sellers and their surroundings – transformed in becoming an image on the wall.
In this way their own images at the “Shop-Abutting” can work as a bridge between the art space and themselves.
Ahmed Kamel
born 1981 in Cairo, received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo.
Showing interest in using art as a form to address social issues, he works with photography and video to express his interest in mainly domestic life as well as urban. Kamel participated in a number of artist in residencies and workshops. He also has taken part in various exhibitions in Egypt, Germany, Denmark, Turkey and Jordan.

2010 ARTELLEWA Artist in Residence Program for artists (Arab region, North Africa, and Turkey)
In 2010 The ARTELLEWA Art Space (Cairo) is offering a 2 to 3 Months Residency for 4 Visual Artists from the Arab region, North Africa, and Turkey. The program is sponsored by Arts Collaboratory ( Arts Collaboratory is a Hivos and Doen Foundation programme for visual artists's initiatives in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and for exchange with visual arts organizations in the Netherlands in cooperation with Mondriaan Foundation) .
Artellewa Art Space offers a unique Artist-in-Residence experience, since the residency takes place at one of the most populated areas in Cairo called “ Ard El-Lewa” where artellewa is located.
The artists will reside in a “work and live” neighborhood, where workers and artisans live and work. The neighborhood also offers a friendly atmosphere to the artists.
The artists create their artworks based on their interaction with the people in the neighborhood. In previous residences the artists worked closely with people from the neighborhood, which in fact is one of the reasons behind establishing artellewa, and this reason is to stimulate the participation of the locals in artistic processes in order to build appreciation for the value of arts in daily life.
The residency will include a private work studio, living space, and a monthly stipend which covers meals and local transportation. Artellewa will also cover the costs of artists working materials, and will organize an exhibition for each artist at the Artellewa Gallery by the end of the residency. No other financial support is granted, and round-trip airfare will be covered by the artist.
The call for applications is open to contemporary artists from the Arab region, North Africa, and Turkey: visual artists, photographers, sculptors, performers, writers, video/filmmakers, composers. The selection of the artists will be based on the merits of their applications and portfolios. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee from artellewa.
Deadline:
Applications must be emailed by Jan 31, 2010 for a residency in 2010.
Notification:
Applicants will be notified of selection by email in Feb. 2010.

لفنانين من المنطقة العربية وشمال أفريقيا ، وتركيا
تعلن جاليري أرت اللوا عن منحها أربع منحة إقامة فنان بالقاهرة لمدة من شهرين إلى ثلاثة أشهر , و ذلك خلال عام 2010. سوف تقبل الطلبات من الفنانين من المنطقة العربية وشمال أفريقيا ، وتركيا . و هذه المنحة بدعم من "آرتس كولوباتوري" - ( برنامج مؤسسة هيفوز و دوين لمبادرات الفنانين البصريين في آسيا وافريقيا وأمريكل اللاتينية وللتبادل مع هيئات الفنون البصريه بهولندا بالتعاون مع مؤسسة موندريان)
أرت اللوا تقدم إقامة فنان فريدة من نوعها في ، لأن الإقامة في واحدة من المناطق الأكثر اكتظاظا بالسكان في القاهرة ( حي أرض اللواء).
الفنانون سيعيشون قي الحي الذي يمثل نموذجاً لأحياء العمل و الإقامة معاً, خيث يقيم و يعمل به العمال و أصحاب المهن اليدوية. و الحي يقدم أجواءً حميمة و ودية للفنانين المقيمين. و سيستلهم الفنانون أعمالهم بناءً على تفاعلهم مع سكان الحي.
. وخلقوا أعمالهم الفنية على أساس التفاعل مع الناس في الحي في تجارب إقامة سابقة عمل الفنانون عن كثب مع الناس من الحي ، وهذا هو واحد من الأسباب الكامنة وراء إنشاء أرت اللوا, ألا و هو تحفيز مشاركة السكان المحليين في العمليات الفنية من أجل اعلاء تقديرها لقيمة الفنون الحياة اليومية.
وسوف تشمل المنحة الإقامة في استوديو خاص ، والحصول على راتب شهري يغطي وجبات الطعام و التنقلات المحلية. ستغطي أرت اللوا أيضا تكاليف المواد الفنية للفنانين ، وسوف تنظم معرضا لكل فنان في نهاية فترة الإقامة. سيقوم الفنان من طرفه بتغطية تذاكر الذهاب و العودة من و إلى القاهرة.

Art experienced artist in a case of a unique moment, which goes to the world like schizophrenia where separated from the real world, He fly and mixes with it.
Haunted ideas sometimes become so dominant on his mind, and here is entering into moving these ideas or signs of mental reality to the visual and again like in the case of birth to see those ideas in the form of art work product.
Which leads eventually to a type of psychological equilibrium of the creator , then he passes the opportunity to move again and again ....

أخصائي نفسي وموسيقي، يعمل ويعيش بالقاهرة
الفن حالة يعيشها الفنان في لحظة فريدة، ينتقل من خلالها الي عالم يشبه الفصام حيث ينفصل عن العالم الواقعي، ويطير فيه ويتمازج معه.
تؤرقه الأفكار في بعض الأحيان بحيث تصبح مسيطرة علي ذهنة، وهنا يدخل في حيز الإنتقال بهذه الأفكار أو الاشارات من الذهني إلي المرئي والواقع مرة أخري في حالة اشبه بالولادة لنري من خلالها تلك الأفكار في شكل العمل الفني المنتج.
مما تؤدي بالنهاية الي نوع من انواع الإتزان النفسي للمبدع حتي تواتيه فرصة انتقال اخري....

The artist Mariló and Anne, from LaFundició, are artists in residence in artellewa until the end of December. They are doing an art project for the children of Art Alloa, to interchange experiences and to connect them with the children of the same age in Barcelona.
The Residence and exchange project is organized by artellewa and the Centre d'art i natura with the support of the Spanish Embassy in Cairo and the Agencia Espanola de cooperacion इन्तेर्नकिओनल.

Destinia colabora con la ONG Artellewa para ayudar a los enfermos de cáncer
MADRID, 14 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -
La agencia de viajes 'on line' Destinia está colaborando "activamente" con la ONG egipcia Artellewa, cuya última actuación fue la decoración de un hospital de niños enfermos de cáncer a través de la incorporación de pinturas y paneles ornamentales.
"Tras varias semanas de trabajo, se ha logrado convertir el espacio en el que conviven los enfermos en un lugar más cálido y humano, gracias a la incorporación de pinturas y murales con coloridos motivos florales y vegetales, imágenes de aves y techos que simulan un cielo con nubes", recalcó la agencia de viajes 'online' en un comunicado.
Artellewa es un espacio de arte contemporáneo independiente, sin ánimo de lucro, fundado en 2007 por Hamdy Reda, con el apoyo de otros artistas, sociólogos y periodistas. Localizada en uno de los barrios más marginales de El Cairo, esta galería se involucra con causas de índole social y cultural y está colaborando en numerosos proyectos destinados a apoyar a los más desprotegidos.
El artista está muy concienciado de los problemas que padecen los niños más desfavorecidos de El Cairo y en su galería ofrece talleres específicos para los más pequeños y se involucra constantemente en el desarrollo de iniciativas que contribuyan a su bienestar.

"الندوة الأولى..الإصدار الأول"
تقيم "آرت اللواء" أولى ندواتها الأدبية, يوم الجمعة الموافق 3 أبريل, تحت عنوان "الندوة الأولى.. الإصدار الأول", يتحدث فيها كلاٌ من الروائية إيمان عبد العظيم محمد عن روايتها "الممر الضيق", والقاصة رضوى أسامة عن مجموعتها "جردل وصابون سايل", والشاعر أحمد شلبي عن ديوانه "اللي اتكسر يتطوح", ليقدموا بذلك شهادة حول تجربة الإصدار الأول, وستدير الندوة ياسمين مجدي.
تعد هذه الندوة أول الأنشطة الأدبية لمساحة "آرت اللواء", التي سيناقش عبرها الأعمال القصصية, والروائية, والشعرية, الصادرة حديثاً, يوم الجمعة الأولى والثالثة من كل شهر, في السابعة مساءً, ومن المقرر أن تكون الندوة القادمة عن سيرة الأراجوز الفنية

Men and Chairs
The Male Street
Chairs in the street, scattered or gathered in coffee shops. The male street. A place of playing, talking, or moments of self-absorption over a cup of tea or a shisha. I’ve asked some of these men to hold the red helmets with which I am drawing a symbolic line around the Mediterranean basin. A line of red dots which is intended to be a way of union between people and different cultures.
Looking through the camera’s lens, or being absent from what happens around us, they became, for a moment, part of this chain as other people have already done so in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Italy, or Spain.
I do not know to which extent the unexpected presence of these helmets that you can see in all the photographs has meant something more than a game, or a practical joke to them. I am certain, however, that my passage through Ard El-Lewa would have been more distant if I had not gotten closer to its inhabitants with this request.
It is not by any means about furtive photos taken without anyone’s knowledge and intended to capture the spontaneity of everyday life.
Everyone has seen the helmets, strange objects, on the ground or in their own hands. I’ve shooted them with a tripod and patience.
I can say that a brief moment of privacy has been established between us.
I, as well, have sat in their chairs with a cup of tea in my hand.
Joma
Joma alternates his artistic work in Barcelona with the project "Endless Voyage" which has led him to visit the countries of the Mediterranean basin, drawing with his worker helmets a symbolic line of red dots. With this, he seeks to create an ideal way of communication between places and cultures.
رجال و كراسي
شارع الذكور
كراسي في الشارع متفرقه أو مجتمعة داخل المقاهي. شارع الرجال .مكان لللعب و المحادثه أو شرود الذهن أمام كوب الشاي أو الشيشه. لقد طلبت من بعض هؤلاء الرجال حمل الخوذات الحمراء لأرسم بها خط رمزي حول البحر الأبيض المتوسط .
خط ذات نقاط حمراء ليمثل طريق الإلتقاء بين الشعوب و الثقافات المختلفه .
محدقاً للحظة في الكاميرا الفوتوغرافيه، أو بالأحرى شاردين بأذهانهم، وبنظرات تائهه , أصبحوا في لحظة جزءاً من هذه السلسه.
كما سبق لأشخاص أخرين أن فعلوا ذلك في مصر و سوريا و لبنان و تركيا و اليونان و إيطاليا أو إسبانيا.
لا أعرف لأي مدى تعني وجود هذه الخوذات - التي يمكن أن تراها في جميع الصور الفوتوغرافيه- بالنسبه لهم أكثر من كونها لعبه أو مزحه عابره.
و مع ذلك فإني متأكد بأن وجودي في أرض اللواء كان من الممكن جداً أن يكون أكثر بعداً، إذا لم أكن قد أقتربت من سكانها بهذا الطلب.
بأي حال إنها ليست صور عابره تم التقاطها بسرعة دون أن تلفت إنتباه أحد قاصدة انتاج صور للحياة اليومية بتلقائيه. فالجميع قد شاهد الخوذات، تلك الأشياء الغريبه، على الأرض أو بين أياديهم. لقد أنجزت عملي بهدوء وبكاميرا مثبته علي حامل.
استطيع ان اقول بأني قد أقمت لحظة قصيره من الخصوصية بيننا.
و كذلك قد جلست على كراسيهم و الشاي بيدي.
جوما
يقوم جوما بعمله الفني في برشلونا علي مشروع يدعى "رحلة لا تنتهي - Endless Voyage" الذي حمله لزيارة بلاد حوض البحر المتوسط، ليرسم بخوذات العامل خط رمزي ذات نقاط حمراء، و بها بدى كأنه يرسم طريق مثالي للإتصال بين الشعوب و الثقافات.
خلف عينيك
الجميع يرتدون الأقنعة. كل فرد لديه شفرته اللغوية الفريدة, ومعرفته.القناع يحمينا من خلال إخفاء شخصنا الضعيف القابل للاستغلال.
لا أستطيع جعل أي شخص أن يفهم بالضبط نواياي أو معنى ماأريد إيصاله. أنا فقط أوفر غرفة بصرية لك لترى, وما يجري من وراء عينيك متروك لك لتقوله. إنها حالة من التواصل.
النصوص المستخدمة في هذا العمل التركيبي قد تم اختيارها من مختلف الكتب المقدسة ومن ديانات من جميع أنحاء العالم.
بدأت فكرة هذا المشروع في عام 2006 في القاهرة والآن تعرض هنا في معرضها الخامس و الأخير.

BEHIND YOUR EYES
Everybody is wearing a disguise. Each individual has a unique code of language and knowledge. The disguise is a protection to hide our vulnerable persona against being exploited. I can not make anybody understand exactly my intentions or meaning. I am just providing a visual room for you to feel. What’s going on behind your eyes is for you to say. It is a matter of communication.
The texts I have used in this installation have been selected from various holy books from religions all over the world.
This project started as an idea in 2006 in Cairo and now presented here as the 5th and final installation.
Pekka Persson lives and works in Norway. He works in many different styles and techniques. He received International Award for a short film in Germany and has work has been exhibited at major solo exhibitions in Scandinavia and since 2005 he became a part of the Cairo art scene.

one3 venue© is an artist run, non-commercial network of galleries for showing and exchanging contemporary art, established by an international collaboration between five art venues in five countries: Denmark, Japan, France, Scotland and Egypt.
one 3 venue© network strives to create a forum for dialogue, discussion and exchange among artists throughout the world, and to provide an audience the opportunity to view contemporary work from different countries – without compromising the artistic development
Each venue sites an identical glass cube of 80x80x80cm, placed on a 100cm high plinth
Artists are called upon to submit project proposals for one3 venue© 's 2008/09 cycle. Three artists from Egypt will be selected to show at all 5 cubic venues.

Through a winding alleyway in Giza, in the rundown neighborhood of Ard El-Lewa, nestled between old buildings is the Artellewa gallery, one of the newest and most talked about art centers in Egypt.
On the small rooftop, there's a sensation of pure joy and a carefree attitude. Children here are quieter, focusing on perfecting their drawings and paintings. For more than four months, Artellewa's workshop has given underprivileged children in the area an outlet to express themselves and find their hidden talents.
The workshop is one of many ideas Hamdy Reda, owner and founder of Artellewa, had in mind when opening the gallery earlier this year. "One of the primary goals of Artellewa was to provide artistic services for kids and teenagers in the area," Reda told The Daily Star Egypt.
The children's work is currently on display in an exhibition called "Awel Quatfah."
The activities normally available to the children are limited. For them, this workshop is a retreat and a chance to practice a hobby they can afford.
Although none of the kids could articulate their passion for art, their eyes gleam the moment they complete a painting. They all have different dreams for their futures, but the majority hope to become artists or at least continue being involved with art.
I found Reda on the rooftop with a group of six- to nine-year-old kids who sat in the shade painting, coloring and just having fun.
The idea behind the workshop was simple: create a place for kids to paint and provide them with some material free of charge. There are no rules, no restrictions and no requirements; even those who do not know how to paint can still participate. The adults' role is limited to supervision.
Artist Hanna El Daygham brought her old coloring materials and plenty of blank paper and gave them to the kids visiting her exhibition. The idea came to her when she saw how much they enjoyed drawing.
"We got El Daygham some chairs and tables and the project kicked off right away," Reda said.
Reda, a resident of Ard El-Lewa, made no announcements or invitations. "Many of the [neighborhood] kids are familiar with the place, so as soon we started the project, they just came."
He considered postponing his project until school let out in the summer, but too many children came on a regular basis. So workshop was held on Fridays during the school year.
At first, the kids were given the artists' leftover materials, but soon enough, Hamdy bought them brand-new water colors. Later on, Hamdy invited a number of his friends to participate in the workshop.
Ibrahim Saad, who went to college with Hamdy, said the reason he joined the project was because he believes that "childhood, and the work created in it, is the period that differentiates a good painter from a great one."
Saad added that he personally benefited from his experience with the children. "It's always fascinating, for me as an artist, to watch them create something out of nothing without any preparation," Saad said.
Another contributing painter is Magdy Moustafa, a resident artist at the gallery who is currently working on a sound-art project. Moustafa studied developmental psychology for five years and has previously worked as an art teacher.
Moustafa's commitment to the workshop is rooted in his belief that the kids of Ard El-Lewa need art more than children in more privileged areas. "These kids are hardly exposed to this type of entertainment and culture. They desperately need to express themselves without boundaries, play and [interact] with each other," Moustafa said.
Most of the displayed paintings of the workshop are simple, yet spontaneous. The content of the girls' artwork focuses mainly on nature and landscapes, depicting oceans or vast green meadows. Boys, on the other hand, mainly feature TV characters or superheroes.
One of the most promising participants of the children's workshop is 10-year-old Hebatallah Hussein, who has been a regular visitor of Artellewa since it first opened. Her paintings are vibrant and expressive.
According to Saad, her paintings are exceptional and she has great potential in becoming an accomplished artist.
Both Moustafa and Reda believe that children do not learn art appreciation in schools, and this is one of the main aims of the workshop.
Hamdy says it's hard to pinpoint the impact of the workshop on the children, and he's not too concerned with doing so. "My foremost ambition is to set up a place for them to reflect their impression of the world through colors and pictures," Hamdy said.
He's also concerned about finding more room to accommodate the increasing number of children.
"All I really wish is for those children to have an artistic sense," Moustafa said, "to learn how to enjoy life through beauty."

Artellewa brings a new perspective full of colors, funny shapes to Ard El Lewa district
Flying pink chicken or naked baked women? In either case, Malak Helmy didn't fail to grab our attention in the witty and eccentric way she garnished this beautiful and eccentric glass cube gallery.
The JICPB Cube Gallery is an international collaboration between five independent art spaces in five different countries.
The Cube Gallery features France, Japan, Scotland, Denmark and Egypt who joined the group in May 2007 thanks to Mohamed Abdallah, an artist who met with the Cube's founder, Klavs Weiss, while taking an art program in Spain with him. The Cube wants to provide an opportunity to show new and exciting developments in the contemporary practice of artists from different countries, and to raise awareness of modern art in culturally deprived locations throughout the world.
Three different artists from each country are presenting their works. Last month, it was Houreya El Sayed. In June it was Malak Helmy and next month's Egyptian artist is now being selected. The artists' works will tour in an exchange program with the other collaborating countries for 15 months, three months per country. This offers great exposure for young Egyptian artists, at the same time, enabling them to participate in the global network and a forum for artistic dialogue.
The artists were instructed to create an experimental piece using a glass cube measuring 80cm, placed on a 100cm platform. Last week Malak Helmy transformed this glass cube into a vitrine at a confectionery. The hovering pink, brown and black "Gateaux Soiree" embodies the perverse perfection of display, the etiquette of a world of delights and flavors coolly composed into bite-sized, beautiful cakes and chocolates to tempt the viewer from a distance.
The confectioner's display is unblemished, pure beauty formed in rigid order — they require small mouths, small nibbles and a napkin to be eaten properly. With obsessive etiquette they preserve themselves as samplers of delights and mask their potential to become what they would themselves consider to be grotesque — from the way they are eaten, to the consequences that follow — that may destroy their feigned composure.
Helmy noticed that "the kids found it quite alluring but funny. Women giggled a lot and found the gateaux aspect a little embarrassing I think."
Helmy is a multi-talented AUC art graduate. Although her work is mainly composed of paintings, her main interest is in seeing people interact with her art and for her art to live among them. That is why The Cube Gallery project perfectly fits with her vision.
Helmy is known for her huge black and white tableaux at Zamalek’s Nile-front Sequoia restaurant, where she would translate her spontaneous thoughts into attractive sketched layers of calligraphy “Kalam Milaza." She previously showcased her work in Townhouse and Falaky galleries and in Bangladesh where she displayed project called "Film Hindi," a series of fictional stories of herself and her close friends shown through Egyptian and Bangladeshi film posters.
What astonished me is how Helmy subtly succeeded in integrating two different worlds in perfect harmony. The theme she chose paradoxically emphasizes the contrast between the sophisticated world of perfection and meticulousness she depicts in her work with the simple world of Ard El Lewa residents, though that wasn't really her intention.
On the one hand there's a frank sensuality emanating from the artist's work where the ambiguous gateaux are candidly displayed and are waiting to be devoured. On the other hand a glass case serves as a reminder that one can look but not touch — an Egyptian cliché, hence the title of the instillation "Gateaux Soiree."
